On Saturday, March 10, 2019, a bench memorializing the life of Juan Ledgard was dedicated at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala, Florida.
The effort was spearheaded by Jenifer Robinson and was the result of a fundraising campaign in which monies were raised for the purchase of two AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) and a memorial bench in honor of Juan, who succumbed to a heart attack while participating in a 2018 March STRIDE show at the FHP.
The dedication took place at a show sponsored by Southeast Baroque Horse Shows on what would have been Juan’s 60th birthday.
Below is the dedication delivered by Jenifer:
“Thank you for joining us today, March 10th, for the dedication of this bench to Juan. I think we would find it apropos to honor him today on what would have been his 60th birthday.
I did not know Juan personally, only what I saw at horse shows or the Tack Shack, where I would inevitably see him and think, ‘I know that guy from somewhere,’ and then it would dawn on me—from horse shows. I don’t think you had to know him to see what kind of person he was—joyful, full of life, full of love for horse and rider. I know this to be true because of the outpouring of love and donations in his name when he left us a year and six days ago.
Our dear Lord took him home, in my opinion, in the best circumstances you could ask for if it was your time to leave this earth.
Doing what you loved to do and gone instantly- no suffering.
I was told by someone close to him that Juan always had lots of chairs around his barn for people to rest and watch the horses and riders.
With the leftover funds from the GOfund me campaign for AED’s, I was able to purchase this bench and stone so we may hold Juan in our remembrance of him as we sit and watch the horses and riders, and know he is watching from the heavens above.”
