April 29, 2009 - Kim Benson, Barbara Brown, Irene Gentile and Diane Laws participated in the annual Black Stallion Literacy Project hosted by the Junior League of Ocala at the Southeast Livestock Pavilion. The Junior League raises funds to provide every first grader in Marion County with two books from the series written by Walter Farley. These books are about Little Black, a pony and Big Red, a horse. We used our own horses and scripted lectures on shoeing, saddling, nutrition and feeding to relate back to the plots of the books. 1,600 students were bussed to the Livestock Pavilion for the event. It was really cute when the students stepped up to the stall and read passages from the book to Enystyne. Diane Laws handled the question, "how do you know if its a girl or boy horse?" I probably would have deferred that answer (in panic) to the teachers! If time permitted, I was able to have the students brush or pet Enystyne. The high point for me was when one little girl stepped up to pet my pony, and paused with her hand on his shoulder with a look of sheer rapture on her face. Priceless! See picture below.
